Well, I just attended and participated in the YouTube Korea press conference – so you’ve probably read in the news that YouTube Korea has officially opened its doors in Korea and the site gone live.

I had little time to do it, but went with something that felt right, like a real greeting. Perhaps not too creative, but given my time schedule, surprising that I even pulled this much off.

With the attention that getting featured on YT Korea’s front page will bring, it’s time to get back to getting SeoulGlow back online. Next up is the final part of the Korean astronaut series, as well as new episodes. I’ve already gotten as many views on the Superkids episode TODAY as watched it since months ago. So we’re going to have more viewers.

Anyone out there who’d like to help with subtitling, editing, or producing episodes, please get in touch at my email address at the top right of the page.

Let’s get SeoulGlow going again! To do that, I need help. Care to join the team? Contact me!

Enjoy!

SeoulGlow is looking for interns to assist with video production, editing, transcription, translation, and subtitling for the video podcast. Ideal candidates would be able to work for up to 10 hours a week or so, and be students in the Seogang, Ewha, Yonsei, or Hongdae areas, since my home studio is quite close by.

You would be able to learn the basics of video production and post-production, as well as working with Macintosh computers, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro. Also, for sound production, GarageBand, Audacity, and SoundTrack are the programs that we would be using, in addition to all kinds of other multimedia production.

Also, you would be somewhat bilingual, and potential Korean applicants should note that since I and many of the people I work with are American, English skills will be important. I do speak Korean, but many of the people and talent we will be working with won’t. So the chance to get to free talk in English should be an added draw here.

Finally, the intern will be paid a stipend of 3,500 won an hour – not much, but then again, this is one of those internships that could be actually worth doing for free, considering the concrete production, video editing, and other skills being taught in an English environment. So the small stipend should be considered a gesture of appreciation for your time, rather than a wage.

If you know anyone interested, please tell them to come to this blog, click my contact link in the top right-hand corner, and get in touch with me right away, with a resume in MS Word format.

– One position will be a combined intern/assistant, and should be reliable, smart, and somewhat bilingual. This person will learn and also help train a second intern.

– The other position will be primarily an intern only.

Dear readers, if you are connected to some smart, savvy students, tell them not to dawdle. I need two interns fast!

Originally hailing from Ohio, Michael attended high school at Phillips Andover Academy and went on to major in American History/American Civilization at Brown University, where he graduated in 1994, and spent two years in Korea on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, where he taught as a middle school teacher for two years, learned Korean, and developed a research interest in this country. He has received two separate Fulbright grants – one as an ETA and one as a full grantee – and has been active in the academic community, having presented papers on Korean national identity at several academic conferences, including conferences at Yonsei and Harvard Universities, as well as given a presentation on his photo work as a Fulbright.

Michael has also taught photography and video in Seoul alternative schools (대안학교) and is working on a photo book. He presently works as an editor for an academic journal at UNESCO, has taught several non-English (i.e. history or other humanities courses) university classes in Korea, and also speaks Korean at a high level of proficiency.

Michael is working on his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in the Department of Comparative Ethnic Studies and at present, his research centers around Korean ethnic nationalism. A self-taught webmaster, Michael started constructing sites in 1997, did some commercial web design on the side, and had his first “blog” up in 1998, when he also had an idea for an MP3-based “radio show” of a female comedian friend that one might now call a “podcast.”

Presently, Michael is actively trying to ride the wave of Web 2.0 sensibilities and technologies into the Korean market before podcasting, pro blogging, and true “user created content” will really hit late in 2007, when Korean portal sites and media companies finally realize that their top-down “UCC” model isn’t the path to follow, which he thinks will happen sometime in the middle of next year. Towards that end, he is actively developing and maintaining:

This is actually an experiment with embedding Metacafe content. We’ll see how it goes – and if you’re reading this and seeing a player, it probably went well.

As a person who did TKD, liked the sparring, but also got knocked in the head a couple times in matches, I feel for this guy. But that’s a sweet-ass kick, and right to the head. As my master always told me, “Keep your hands up!”

That guy won’t forget that lesson.

Man, why won’t the video stay centered? Grr.

Our first episode is being edited right now, so look forward to a real show within the next week. It will consist of an introduction to our video magazine from a trip to Chongno and Cheonggyecheon on New Year’s Eve, with greetings from many of the people we met there in the street, as well as an explanation for what our podcast is about and why we were motivated to create it.

What a great way to start out a new year. Thanks, Apple, for the swift registration.

Happy New Year, everyone!

We’ll be shooting in the Chongno area, recording video greetings for the New Year, as well as hopes and resolutions. This will be for the introductory SeoulGlow video podcast, so we’ll be getting some establishing shots and cover shots to go under a voiceover.

You can track us down by calling me directly. We’ll be wandering around the area from around 9PM–1AM.

SeoulGlow Video Podcast Submitted! December 29, 2006

History has been made.

The XML link for our podcast has been submitted, and we are in the midst of the Long Wait to Be Approved by Apple. Our podcast was submitted to Apple’s iTunes server in the wee hours of the morning, after some kicks and sputters from Apple’s server, shortly after the time indicated in the picture here:

Podcast Submit

The podcast’s XML feed is actually sitting on our servers and awaiting validation by Apple, but we’ll be submitting them around the smaller networks on the web as well. For the sake of you who want to copy and paste it directly, here it is:

http://www.seoulglow.com/podcast/episodes/podcast.xml

And for those of you who don’t want to wait around for iTunes, you can watch “SeoulGlow #0 - Testing” directly.

The idea behind this one was urban, messy, and real – in the city, where you can see, hear, and veritably smell Seoul. The homemade look and the imperfect feel is just what we were looking for. And although we once swore an oath on the bones of the mighty Tangun to never use food or puns on the word “Seoul/soul” in the title of anything artistic we’d do, we just couldn’t resist the easy, greasy, retro funk that emanated from that sax, male falsetto, and the Jheri Curl of the the guy in the red camaro in the movie Coming to America.

Ah – truly funky. Let your Seooooooooul glow, baby!

VIDEO SHOOT: “Hip Hop in Seoul” October 16, 2006

Albert, Sora, and Inkyung –

Our first big chance to film something for the show is here. We want to interview people about hip-hop in Seoul the night of the Jay-Z concert, first going to the concert (but not inside, we’re not interested in that, can’t afford it, probably couldn’t get permission to film) but interview Korean fans waiting outside, then head to Itaewon/Hongdae to catch some of the afterparties we assume will be happening that night.

We will probably start at the Walker Hill (where the dance club will be), then go to Itaewon/Hongdae and probably go back and forth between both, as well as any other “targets of opportunity” we might discover (wouldn’t it be great to get invited to one of the exclusive parties?). That’s what we’re hoping for.

Sora and Inkyung – I hope you might be able to make time for that night (I know it’s short notice), but we’d like to also use this chance to start getting experience in front of the camera. 일석이조.

Here’s just a rundown of the three places I was imagining we might end up in, along with some questions to ask. It’s all tentative.

What do you think?
